spring, new expectations ...

Pomodori nell'orto. Foto di Andrea Mangoni.
Tomatoes in the Garden last season. This year there's variety!
Yes, I know, I do not update (guiltily) the blog for a long time. I would like to tell you about amazing companies that represent good excuses, but the only reason I can camp are un'ingarbugliamento working hours (the "crisis" also affects me), but a wonderful child that requires our presence 48 hours a day, and a number of other commitments / contingencies that are outside both the everyday life but that fill so completely that do not leave me much time. For one thing: I can not respond to e-mail for two weeks.
Anyway.
However, there are plans, hopes and ambitions for next spring and summer months. And today I want to share with you.

In the garden, sow and plant it this year several very interesting variety. Starting with the tomatoes, where thanks to Angelo Passalacqua company of The Friends of I can finally try to grow tomatoes Re Umberto, a real gem of the past. Pending potergli alongside the real tomato Naso del Cavallino, I thought to procure the seeds of two American varieties are very interesting. The Cherokee purple tomato is an almost dark brown, fleshy, resistant to drought and disease, which apparently was already cultivated by the Cherokee Indians, the ' Hillbilly Potato Leaf is a wide variety of leaves similar to that of potato, yellow with red flesh, excellent flavor. Hopefully, in the land of Italy, do not betray their name!
Pepper papaccella Silvana
Among the pumpkins will plant the true sea pumpkin of Chioggia , with seeds coming from the garden of an elderly Chioggia, while among the peppers will sow the short papaccella Silvana bell pepper and a Calabrian that I have been sent seeds, but I've never seen.
to remain among the Solanaceae, we come to the potatoes. sow it in the short two varieties, a red-skinned potato from the Cadore and another purple-fleshed, a French Vitelotte , perhaps not very productive, but that should give the tubers a spectacular color. Among the Umbelliferae, the lovage that a student of my course in botany has taken me from Romania will be the master, while for cabbage & co. continued my personal search for the seeds of broccoli bastard Salboro .

Pear tree centenary of Bruno.
For fruit trees, are at least five different varieties, more or less ancient I'm playing from the plum cuttings, and expect to be able to verify the rooting of peach grafts Lorenzino on blackthorn and azzeruolo on hawthorn. Finally I will try to multiply by three beautiful varieties of graft however, all quite old. In addition I will see what will happen to the beautiful white muscat grape plant according to the gentleman who gave it to me is an old vineyard that did not require treatment antiparassitari...

Quest'anno take away the soil the seeds of carnations waiting for a couple of years, their time - we hope they are still good! While in the backyard of my will a new tree, an oak meraviugliosa a few years of life trapianterò from the shore. It is not the only oak tree to get there: there will be two tiny seedlings, one turkey and one of cork , ready to find their place.

's enough for now. Of irons in the fire there is so much, but it's not finished here. In fact, the next time I'll tell you instead of projects related to animals ...
you soon!

Carnival of Biodiversity - 2 - Biodiversity and adaptation: the constant struggle for food and space

male Chalcosoma atlas. Photo by Andrea Mangoni.

If we could imagine a male Chalcosoma (...), with its shiny armor burnished, and its large and complex horns, enlarged fino alla taglia di un cavallo, o anche di un cane, esso sarebbe uno dei più imponenti animali del mondo.

Charles Darwin

202 anni fa nasceva Charles Darwin.

But what selective pressures led to these giant beetles dinastini to evolve a similar ingombrantissimo paraphernalia? One of the first things to be said in this regard is that the horns and the appendices of dinastini have long been studied. In several animals in which the male secondary sexual characteristics include hypertrophic similar bodies, the latter may be the result of selection sexual females that is they may be more attracted to males from the ornamentations larger, so that would be favored at the time of mating. In reality, this can hardly apply to the case of these beetles, as many females have no way of choosing their partner, and sometimes may even be forced to compulsorily copula. More likely is the actual advantage gained by males during the fighting for possession of food resources, territory and the right to mate: males with horns longer can control the opponent from a distance, avoiding confrontation at close range that could be harbingers of major damage. Moreover, studies on another dinastino, Podischnus Agenor (whose males have a slightly forked horn chest directed forward and a rearward-facing thin cephalic horn) have noted that the adult sex male fight each other using stereotyped movements similar to those used by the beetles themselves to drill cane sugar they eat and where they hide during the day. Perhaps these ornaments then, at least for certain species of Dinastini, have evolved just as an aid to excavation activities and search for food, and then have provided an additional benefit to their owners at the time of the disputes related to reproduction or conquest of territory and food resources. But of course the streets are covered by one thousand animals and plants in the race to grab food from the teeth and put in a place to live, a wonderful article on the rich community of organisms that live and decided to draw sustenance from ... nostro corpo lo potete leggere nel post che Continuo proceso de cambio ha scritto per la precedente edizione del Carnevale.

We said that this form of mimicry can be extremely useful both to escape predators, which hunt their prey: for insects and small animals that eat the mantis is not normally aware that these predators until it is too late. And if the prey are scarce? If the environment is so poor that they ensure the existence of a mantis going to adopt the technique of hunting waiting? Evolution has solved, in some genera, even at this problem: Eremiaphila Africa, for example, although strikingly similar to the stones of the desert where they live, have two pairs of legs cursor that make them highly effective in active hunting of the great sprinter to their prey.

Mantids shaped Orhidea, dry leaves, twigs or clusters of flowers: so many exceptional examples of cryptic camouflage adopted by these insects to escape predators and hunt their prey. Photo by Andrea Mangoni.

Obviously, however, is not only a camouflage to establish the success of these predators: their basic weapon is another fact, an evolutionary ploy that allowed insects are structurally similar to large and placid cockroaches to become very efficient killer. We are talking about the transformation that brought the first pair of limbs of these animals to become raptatorie legs. Coxae long and relatively thin, in fact, bring massive femora with two sets of sharp thorns on the underside, and these in turn are the counterpoint tibiae also equipped with short strong spines, somewhat reminiscent of a set closely the structure of a knife. At rest the legs raptatorie were held in front of or below the chest, folded as in the act of a person who prays, but when the prey is approached within range, they are turned outward at great speed (about one twenty-fifth of a second! ) and trapped in a deadly grip the hapless animal. All of this complex natural weaponry is so efficient to allow the larger species to capture not only insects but also small vertebrates: the American picture of a mantis, a Tenodera aridifolia that captured a small hummingbird did, years ago , around the web.
In fact, the appendices raptatorie turn out to be so efficient that thanks to the pressure of natural selection to be found in very different taxa, a clear sign of convergent evolution. Even among the crustaceans are similar appendages, just think of the shrimp (Squilla mantis ) which are processed chelipedi in appendici raptatorie.

La convergenza evolutiva ha portato both of these predatory insects to develop raptatori forelimbs. Photo by Andrea Mangoni.
The environment that organisms elect as their domicile so often direct influence the availability of food resources for organisms, leading to surprising new solutions, even in those animals and plants that we would not have thought capable of such. It 's the case of a small terrestrial gastropods, the pretty Oxychilus draparnaudi , a mollusk that has chosen as a habitat of choice caves. Seeing no one would say the course is different from many other snails, except perhaps for the color of the body, a soft turquoise blue. But habits are Food that makes it special: the snails that are used to seeing because they eat mostly vegetables, but definitely not abound in these caves. So what? Cha road could choose the poor Oxychilus ? The only apparently possible to become an efficient predator. Its radula, that sort of language that characterizes the toothed mouthparts gastropods, is not operated for munching vegetables, but is used instead to break chitinous integument of insects, such as those of a moth that has decided to spend the winter in a cave. So placid dome-cap is covered with the red skin of the wolf and devour the poor insettuccio asleep. A strategy in a certain winner, as the underground, which is certainly not known for its abundance of food!

And from the caves we pass to another very special environment: peat bogs. Here the food problems do not have animals, as ... plants. Already, in these remarkable places, plants struggle hard to find sufficient nutrients in the soil, especially those from the nitrogen metabolism. What to do? Nothing better, in this case, which actively get their "fertilizer" from the origins, namely capturing small animals that can decompose to provide the plant nutrients it needs. The plant world in this case it is indulged: leaves exuding a kind of glue that traps small insects, leaves, covered with forests, ending with a droplet of sticky hairs that fold with easy to digest the unfortunate animal finished too close, trapping, vegetable shot like that of Dionea, where the simultaneous pressing of at least two of the three hairs in the central part of the leaves causing them to close, or funnel traps of Sarracenia in cui si riesce ad entrare ma non ad uscire, condannati ad affogare e decomporsi nel pozzo costituito da quella foglia modificata che è l'ascidio.

Ma anche in questo caso l'armata degli invertebrati ha in qualche caso trovato a counter: Malaysia in fact some species of insects and arachnids have evolved the ability to live as good diners at the expense of some plants of the genus Nepenthes . Spiders that weave the fabric nell'ascidio, flies whose larvae develop by filtering the liquid in the plant, invertebrate predators and scavengers insects: a small army of species that did just the old but always apparenentemente winning philosophy of "if you can not beat them, join them ".

Clipboard Poultry: Boffa, the first chicks of the year! The

Yesterday, to my delight, the first two chicks were born the year! These are two wonderful examples of Boffa race. I feared the worst, because during the last days of incubation incubator failure had deprived of electricity for more than half a day ... But fortunately, at least two fertile eggs in 4 were unable to hatch! Small is beautiful, and shows the head down in a particular characteristic: they possess that is a blight that helps us to relate the color of adults in costume "Lion" as well as he had adopted in the 30s of last century Taibell. It is a further step that helps us understand the genetic makeup of these animals. Meanwhile, here is the first born of the year!

Clipboard Poultry - The candling eggs

Obviously, is not possible from external examination only tell if an egg has been fertilized or not . We can reasonably expect that if the chicken has been fertilized egg that was deposed in a fertile period and at the same time there was a rooster in the hen house, also in full breeding season (ie outside the period of the set). The only way we can be sure of this however, is to incubate and then proceed with an operation that is called candling .

candling is to pass a beam of light from the blunt pole of an egg, to illuminate the interior and highlight the possible presence of the embryo. There are also special tools called EGGS CANDLER, but for a beginner a flashlight and a dark room are the most convenient and easiest way to approach the candling. Older Farmers and ranchers experts can also hope the eggs simply by placing them against the light in the sun and partial screen with your hand, but we need actually a little 'practice to succeed with equal success.

candling can be made more or less difficult by the type of incubator we use for our eggs. In those basket, the eggs retain an almost vertical position, which on the one hand, generally translates into a higher percentage of hatching the other makes the candling more complicated, because unlike traditional incubators (where the egg is placed horizontally, and gravity is almost always place the embryo near the shell making it more visible) in that basket, the embryo can be placed just below the bladder, even away from the shell, which can be seen at most a few veins. To be sure of the future and then insemination in this case we have to wait at least 6-8 days before successfully on candling.

white shell eggs to the candling can be performed already on day 4, with some success, in that shell pink or brown, instead of starting from the 6th to 8th day. It 'a good idea then to repeat the 16-18th day, to control the development of the embryo and remove those eggs in which the embryo is dead in the meantime.

Global Income: qualcuno conosce questa società?

Here is the question asked by a reader, Fabrizio, the online newspaper lavoratorio.it and response.
- I would take advice on this company (Global Income) which continues to send proposals for tele-working. What is it and what were your experiences on this? Does anyone know of certified serious proposals in teleworking? -
response Jobob:
"We have no idea what the actual proposal and it would be interesting to know how the hell did this company questione a conoscere l'indirizzo email di Fabrizio.

In altre parole, il vero telelavoro è quello svolto da un lavoratore DIPENDENTE che, d'accordo con the company, instead of going every day at the office, performs the same tasks from home. Unfortunately, this form of employees in Italy is limited to some very rare company agreements that can be counted on the fingers of one hand.
Much more frequently, the definition of telework is used inappropriately: it is proposed to self-employment, if not actual business proposals, whose seriousness is to be checked very carefully! To be honest, in over twenty years of experience in the job, there has so far come across an ad like this really clear, transparent and credible.
If any reader would be able to we would be happy to disprove it ... "

Recommended Sites - Fowl Faces Marit de Haan

Trying qulache pollicultura interesting news in fact, I came across a site that I really liked much on the particular approach that has to chickens. This is Fowl Faces of Marit de Haan.

The site is in English, with some sections in French and Dutch, all focused on the experience of the author and his family with the chickens. A website in which photos and video frame the texts suspended halfway between the most basic scientific information and comments on their very personal and emotional animals.

short, a great site that deserves to be visited because Marit has decided to leave its readers the chance to download their book, Fowl faces, published and sold through the platform of LuLu but available for free download on his website. The book follows the same guidelines of the site, framed with magnificent photos of the chickens of the author. You can download a free

but be careful, because it's heavy and it will take time - but I assure you that it's worth it! However, if you wanted to buy the hard copy, you may do so by contacting Marit e-mail: fowlfaces@live.co.uk .
Mille therefore hope to Marit, who will always continue so!

Lupus Signs And Symptoms

THANKS! Thank you, the blog now has new eyes!

New videocameraSamsung HMX H200

Some time ago I appealed to readers because it helps me to give a new camera blog for the chance to make good quality movies to offer. Well, after a few weeks, the objective has been achieved! Thanks to the generosity of some of you, especially Michael and Ida , the blog now has new eyes with which to watch the world!

Yesterday In fact, the Epiphany in early (or late Father Christmas as you enjoy better) Oryctes.com led to a new camcorder: the Samsung HMX H200.

Why this choice? This is an entry level HD camcorder that records onto SD ticket in MP4 format, which makes it very convenient to pour everything into the computer. The H200 has a CMOS sensor 1 / 4, 1 "to 3.32 MP, timelapse function with the click of a frame every 1, 3, or 5 seconds, 34 mm filter, 20X optical zoom ... short, seems to have all the characteristics to be an excellent compagana of our travel blog. Some users have reported a slight buzz if you zoom out in conditions of silence, that mean? For the purposes for which will be used by the blog, I do not think this will incrinerà excellent value for money. Already, the price : how much? electronics stores in this area ranged between 260 and 330 €, if the same H200 stimulate your desire to get a new HD camera entry-level post at the end you will find links to Amazon's store, which offers some to a competitive price.

Waiting to be able to put online the first video shot with it, I leave you a series of tests found video on YouTube. I think they are useful. Here then also link to a discussion forum dedicated to H200 of AV Magazine. to me is definitely served to orient myself toward this purchase.

Thanks again to you!

Birth of a new service: the Library Oryctes.com!

Books, books, books!

Happy New Year to all! That 2011 could bring a sea of good things! At our blog, for now, the new year has brought a new service as : the Library Oryctes.com !

I have written elsewhere that I really love the idea of putting ads on the site automatically generated text.

I consider worthwhile and beautiful , and from this point of view the service offered by Amazon is fabulous! It allows me to choose volume per volume texts that I consider of great help in some way to blog readers, and only those! So, if I find a beautiful passage, very good - I know - on the insects of South Africa, I can make life easier for readers who want to get them by giving them a way to have it come home with a few clicks of the mouse.

Furthermore, the volumes reported are always books that I have read and enjoyed or that I have been strongly recommended by friends that condividono la mia stessa passione.

In altre parole, continuerò a cercare di offrire agli utenti del blog documentazione e volumi d'epoca da scaricare gratuitamente , so as to preserve ancient knowledge and documents from oblivion. I'm already preparing to offer other volumes, you will see that there will be surprises.

So that's what! Do you want to begin to see what are the first recommended reading? Click the link below! And once again to all of you HAPPY NEW YEAR!
